I'm happy at where I found myself filming this Session that has become one of my favorites. Chicago is my amazing second home in a short string of second homes without a first. It was only natural, I suppose, that after all the promises and hopes that all of us Pollifax friends made about doing Wanderer Sessions outside New Jersey, the first step would be mine and in the roomy city streets of Lincoln Park. The first ever Wanderer Session in the Midwest is a fantastic one.
We met Anna outside her Uncle's house. A lovely walk passed Chicago streets to the Pier soon turned into a chain of short cab rides under searing summer heat. She's from the Northeast and now lives in Wisconsin I learned from our sporadic small talk. But talks were short when we were all gasping for air.
I was a little worried when Anna took her place on some rocks by the water, guitar at the ready. The view was amazing, the skyline was clear and the water shining, but with my one meager microphone, it was a challenge. I sat it down by her feet, bending the tripod to make the mic face upwards towards her. It didn't help that she's taller than I am. But like most of these sessions, I really just go for it and see how everything comes out on the other side. I gave her the signal and wow. Anna's voice is amazing. It was melodic and blasted through all the winds of the Windy City, through people, through traffic, everything. Problem solved!

"I was walking through Chicago thunderstorms," she sings. I have a thing for songs with a waltz rhythm. This song has been stuck in my head. The words, the sounds, the shades in her eyes, the misty buildings behind her, everything. This whole moment has been stuck in my head since I captured it. I don't think I even need the film. That's how you know isn't it?
My friend Leah became my assistant for the day. We ended in some massive lily pond by Lincoln Park Zoo. Anna was down for an experiment. Leah held the mic while I filmed Anna walking through the walls of trees of that makeshift garden. Leah and I were walking backwards the whole time. Cheers for Lincoln Park people really flattening the pathway thoroughly.
I had a drink with Anna in some Spanish bar after the session. We spoke about poetry and fiction and songwriting and her friend's 365-song project for the year. Lovely session, lovely new friend. It never ends. I'm thankful for it.
