Car horns blaring in fourth-of-July traffic, the annoyed groans of people crippled by the summer heat, the howl of the air as it sliced through the trees, I was stuck in the middle of this almost motionless highway dance. But it took all this for me to really appreciate how special the music of When I Was 12 really is.

Adrianne, that pretty, sprite of a girl, sings like the child of a siren. Her voice swims freely through the sounds of a xylophone, a saxophone, and a couple of guitars, anything from the band mates that complement her. When you pass all the happy melodies of their songs, there are the great lines that are just too heart braking, too honest to not be charming.

Adrianne emailed me a few weeks back to see if I was interested in filming her band. She was adamant in her idea of filming in a flower shop and pretty much took care of everything. I got to the small flower store sitting lonely and loveless between a McDonalds and a hospital. The two older folk sitting behind the desk paid no attention to my camera and to the band hauling in all their instruments. “Do you need any flowers? No? Ok, fire away!” the lady salesperson said to us. It seemed I was there to record a memory already fresh in someone’s mind.
